About PickBeat
Empowering guitar learners worldwide with precision rhythm, zero-friction tablature, and instant acoustic feedback.
Why We Built PickBeat
Learning guitar is notoriously challenging during the first few weeks. Over 80% of beginners abandon practice within ninety days, primarily due to three persistent hurdles:
- Fragmented Tooling: Students traditionally juggle between a standalone metronome app, a tuner app, a chord chart PDF, and a separate tab player. Switching back and forth interrupts muscle memory acquisition.
- Lack of Instant Feedback: When practicing alone at home, beginners cannot tell whether a plucked string is clean, buzzing, or out of pitch until bad habits become ingrained.
- Cognitive Overload: Classical notation and complex six-line TABs require reading and fretboard mapping at the same time. Beginners need to separate right-hand plucking from left-hand chord formation before combining them.
We created PickBeat to bridge this gap: a clean, zero-installation web environment that runs directly in your browser on desktop, tablet, and mobile, providing continuous, real-time auditory guidance.
Who We Are: Musicians & Audio Engineers
PickBeat is built and maintained by a dedicated collective of conservatory-trained musicians, experienced guitar instructors, and audio software engineers.
12+ Years Teaching Experience
Our pedagogical curricula are designed by professional instructors who have coached hundreds of novice acoustic and electric guitar students through beginner milestones.
Web Audio Pioneers
Our engineering team specializes in sample-accurate browser synthesis, low-latency DSP (Digital Signal Processing), and client-side pitch detection algorithms.
Audio Technology & Complete Privacy
Unlike mobile applications that stream voice data to remote cloud servers, PickBeat processes all audio 100% on your local device:
- Sample-Accurate Lookahead Scheduling: We utilize Web Audio API's hardware clock to schedule click beats and synthesizer events, eliminating the 20-50ms timing jitter typical of JavaScript timers.
- Real-Time YIN Pitch Detection: Our autocorrelation engine extracts fundamental frequencies (
f0) from your microphone signal within a ±150ms listening window. - Absolute Audio Privacy: No audio streams, recordings, or microphone inputs are ever uploaded to our servers. All frequency calculations terminate in your browser's Web Worker thread.
Curriculum Standards & Review Process
Every exercise, chord fingering, and tablature transcription on PickBeat undergoes a rigorous multi-step verification process to ensure absolute musical and ergonomic accuracy. We explicitly cross-reference our practice structures against peer-reviewed motor-learning research (e.g., Ericsson’s deliberate practice principles and Cepeda’s distributed spacing effect).
